Summer takes place in the southern hemisphere between December and February. This is when temperatures are at their hottest – reaching well over 30 degrees in parts of Australia. For a slightly cooler – and quieter – holiday, choose the shoulder season, which takes place between August and December and February to April. In New Zealand, the north island enjoys subtropical temperatures in the summer, while the south island can dip below -10 degrees in winter. 

There are plenty of events happening in Australia and New Zealand to mark on your calendar. The Woodford Folk Festival is one of the biggest musical events in Australia, taking place near Brisbane every April. The cuisine in Australia and New Zealand doesn’t differ too wildly from the food in the UK. Expect plenty of seafood, especially by the coasts, and American favourites like burgers.
